- Between 1961 and 1991, the elderly population grew by 128% but the 25 to 44 age group grew by only 90%.
- By 2011, the number of canadians aged 65 and older will increase by 40 per cent to almost five million.
- Today, one in eight Canadians is currently providing care for someone with chronic health problems.
The facts are compelling. Canada's population is undergoing radical changes - changes which will have a profound impact on our society. Governments, seniors groups and caregivers are all asking important and difficult questions about how our society will adapt to these changes.
Most of us have experienced the joys and challenges of caring for the elderly either as children, grandchildren, friends or spouses. As caregivers, there are times when all of us could use some helpful advice and reassurance. Seniors themselves also need information and practical advice. Caregiving with June Callwood, a 13 episode television series and video, is intended to help Canadian seniors and their families deal with the challenges and maximize the joys of aging and caregiving.
Hosted by June Callwood, one of Canada's most respected journalists and broadcasters, the series provides practical and timely information to help older Canadians and their families maintain maximum independence and quality of life. The series covers a range of issues, providing advice from experts on such topics as financial planning for aging Canadians, safety and security, health care and fitness, housing options, and personal relationships, as well as coping with the stress of caring for older family members. Each episode of the televised series offers opportunities for live discussion.
Viewers are encouraged to phone in questions and comments.
